The general information of the JAR

The Jewish Autonomous Region is located in the southern part of the Russian Far East. In the west it borders on the Amur Region, in the east – with the Khabarovsk Territory, in the south its border along the Amur River coincides with frontier of Russia and China. The area of the region's territory makes 36,3 thousand sq. kilometers. The population for January 1, 2009 is 185,412 thousand people. The regional centre is the city of Birobidzhan.

The area has a favorable geographical position. It is in immediate proximity to the coast of the Pacific Ocean and the basic economic partners in this region, has an exit in the seas of the Pacific Ocean through the Amur waterway. The Trans-Siberian railway, which provides the shortest routes from the Western Europe and Middle East in the countries of the Asian-Pacific region, is located on the territory of the region.

In territory of the Jewish Autonomous Region the deposits of minerals, including gold, tin, iron, manganese, magnesites, brucite, graphite, limestones and dolomite and, phosphorites, mineral paints, natural facing stones, raw materials are revealed. There are deposits of brown coal and peat.

The economic situation of the Jewish Autonomous Region is characterized by growth of manufacture of the goods and services, investments in a fixed capital, real monetary incomes of the population, increase of a commercial turnover. Industrial and housing construction is actively carried out.

At the industrial enterprises of the region hosieries, knitted products, leather footwear are produced, the wood is prepared and processed, various office and household furniture, cement, building and finishing materials, food stuffs and other goods which are in demand on the market are made. Modernization of the enterprises is conducted to improve the quality of production, and its competitiveness, the modern engineering is introduced as well.

The region has huge tracts of land, suitable for their development for haymaking and a pasture. Presence of natural fodder lands creates favorable opportunities for development of cattle industries, especially for the large horned livestock. The region completely can provide itself with vegetable and dairy production due to own manufacture. The transport complex of the region has automobile and railway transportation. Presence of the ramified network of the common use provides communication of all settlements among themselves and the regional centre.

The basic kinds of communication in the region are post, international, local, documentary, mobile.

The education system of the region includes 75 preschool educational establishments, 97 state day time general educational establishments, 8 evening general educational establishments. The state educational establishment of the higher vocational training "Far East state social - humanitarian academy", branches and representations of higher educational institutions of the Far Eastern region, Institute of the complex analysis of regional problems of the Far Eastern Region, the Russian Academy of Science, Regional institute of improvement of teachers, and also 5 secondary special educational institutions and 8 regional official bodies of the vocational training work in the region. They prepare the staff of cultural workers, middle medical personnel, and experts in the field of economy and management, jurisprudence, trade, light industry, agriculture, railway transportation, builders, gas and electric welders and experts of other branches.

Establishments of public health services of the region are equipped with the modern equipment and the equipment; modern technologies are used in treatment-and-prophylactic activity.

In the region there are one art school, 97 public libraries, 4 museums, 8 musical schools.

Development of physical training and sports in the region is characterized by positive changes of parameters of mass character of sports movement and growth of skill of sportsmen. Children and youth sports schools play the significant role in development of physical training and sports of the region, which prepare for a worthy reserve to our deserved sportsmen.
